German Story-Based Instruction

Story-Based classes come in 10 lesson packages. They take place twice a week for five weeks priced at $150 per person or $200 per family, We are flexible, and upon consultation we can change anything here, whether the length of the course or the content. Everything is based on the needs and desires of the learner.

The German Language, a language renowned for its rich history and cultural significance, serves as the official language of Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein. It is also one of the official languages of Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg

There are approximately 90 million native speakers and millions who use it as a second language. 

The linguistic tapestry of German is woven with a fascinating blend of traditional roots and modern influences. Behind the prominance of the German language lies a treasure trove of literature, folklore, and fairy tales. 

We use almost exclusively the folktales collected by the brothers Grimm:

Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm (1786–1859)

for German Story-Based Instruction.

Story-Based Instruction

NextStep offers Story-Based five-week classes, priced at $150 per person or $200 per family, combines language learning with the magic of storytelling. Students will laugh, draw, sing, and learn German through the lens of classic fairytales. Here are the tales featured in the story-based German classes:

Hänsel und Gretel

This fairy tale was written down by folklorists known as the Brothers Grimm between 1812 and 1857. They collected and compiled stories from peasants, farmers and storytellers. The brothers were interested in preserving the cultural heritage of their homeland, an they saw folktales as a valuable expression of the Germanic spirit.

Now you have the opportunity to enjoy this tale and learn a little bit of the language spoken by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm.

Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten (The Bremen Town Musician s)

A group of unlikely animal heroes embark on an adventure to find a better life. Students will learn the names of a nimals, colors, and simple German expressions while exploring this charming story.

Der Rattenfänger von Hameln (The Pied Piper of Hamelin)

This cautionary tale emphasizes the importance of keeping promises, with a touch of mystery and magic. Students will learn vocabulary related to towns, professions, and everyday actions while immersing themselves in the legend of Hamelin.

Brüderchen und Schwesterchen (Little Brother and Little Sister)

A heartfelt tale of love and resilience between siblings, featuring royal children and a willful brother transformed into a fawn. This story introduces German vocabulary related to family, emotions, and nature.

Der Froschkönig (The Frog King /The Frog Prince)  

A tale of promises and transformation that introduces students to themes of responsibility and character. Students will learn vocabulary related to animals, nature, and everyday objects.

Rumpelstilzchen (Rumpelstiltskin)

A story of wit and resourcefulness where a miller’s daughter must outsmart a mysterious helper. Vocabulary topics include professions, materials, and numbers, all within the enchanting context of this fairytale.

Schneewittchen (Snow White

The beloved tale of a young princess, her evil stepmother, and seven dwarfs. Students will learn German vocabulary for descriptions, household items, and basic storytelling phrases.
